Book Report

Buffalo West Wing by Julie Hyzy

This book is a mystery book, and a main character, Olivia Paras will solve the situation. Olivia is an executive chef of White House. She has two assistants chef, Buckie and Cyan, and Marcel is pastry chef.

New president was elected after she had become an executive chef. She was sad to know that her loved family will leave the White House, but Olivia and her team were also ready to meet new family and new challenge.

On an Inauguration day, Olivia finds a box of chicken wings at the kitchen addressed to the First Kids. However according to the safety protocol Olivia refuses to serve them. Against her wish, the chicken wings were eaten by butlers and housekeepers, and they were lashed to hospital.

Secret service decided to hide the fact that the food was poisoned to First Family, so Olivia lost the trust to be their chef. Later, First Lady hired a new cook, Virgil Ballantire for her family. Virgil wasn’t happy that he was not an executive chef, so he tried to take over Olivia and never let her cook.

One day, Olivia and newly added secret service, Josh were kidnapped and find out the terrorists’ target were to poison First Kids to make them hospitalized to be the hostages against president. They wanted to release the imprisoned terrorist. With the bravery of Olivia, two were able to run away.

  1. This story sounds like an exciting action adventure novel but I wonder how much of a role food plays in it. Did you learn some interesting details about how food is prepared for the first family? What sorts of ingredients are used (all organic, for example)? Does it seem that the author closely researched how White House chefs prepare food for their illustrious clients? In other words, I wonder how close to reality the details of the story are.

These are some of the things I'm curious about...

    * How are White House chefs selected?

    * Is there an official "food taster" who must taste the food to determine if poison was added?

    * Do the chefs have a responsibility to ensure that the first family is eating in a healthy way? What if the president's children wanted to eat only junk food?

    * Does the White House kitchen staff remain basically the same when there is a transition from one presidential administration to another?
